The Practice 1911 is LMP’s syndicated enrichment STEM program that provides a year-round financial education program, in which middle school and high school students simulate facets of day-to-day operations in business management and affecting economic changes. Scholars who participate in The Practice 1911 year-round program develop their personal business plan under the guidance of teachers from their home schools who facilitate learning experiences in business acumen and vocabulary, business models/practices, and student agency around the following categories:

  • Trademarking

  • Principles of Marketing/Strategy

  • Digital Media (Podcasts/Advertising)

  • Data Analysis/Statistics

  • Legal

  • Financial Education

During the six-week summer program, The Practice Scholars’ learning experiences are facilitated by college student-teachers developed in LMP’s teacher pipeline program, The Sword 1911.

The Practice 1911 experience cultivates a fun and energetic environment for student learning, in which The Practice 1911 Scholars develop a sense of camaraderie and accountability partners.

The Practice 1911’s model is based on the combination of providing high-quality extended learning (summer) and case management (advisement, mentoring, active interventions). Both methods of programming complement each other to ensure higher college enrollment, graduation rates, and furthering post-secondary options. The most successful extended learning programs utilize summer hours to decrease the achievement gap. High school student support staff members, school counselors, specifically, are gatekeepers to college access. However, high schools serving predominantly low-income and minority students have counselor to student ratios twice the national average – 1,000 students per counselor versus 470 students per counselor nationally (Executive Office of the President, 2014).

Post- secondary education attainment is principally a middle class and upper-class value; so many students who live in communities where going to college is not the norm not only more than likely do not understand how to navigate the college application process, but many do not seriously consider it an option. These students need adults who can inform students of all post-secondary options, provide insight on college access and economic mobility, and create value around post-secondary educational attainment. Students who are first generation college goers are especially in need of social capital as their parents are likely unable to assist them with the college application and enrollment processes. These students need The Practice 1911.

The Sword 1911 Experience

The Sword 1911 experience is designed for undergraduates of all majors at and for those who intend to pursue careers in education at HBCUs, as well as those who haven’t yet considered it.  The opportunity is unlike any other available to undergraduates and high school seniors. Education coursework is not a prerequisite.

Students from under-resourced communities are more successful when inspired by teachers with similar backgrounds, and our nation is facing a shortage of teachers, especially from diverse backgrounds. During our summer programming,

The Sword 1911 provides a teaching fellowship residency that offers relevant, real-world training to a diverse group of college undergraduates, inspiring many to develop an interest in education careers. This mutually beneficial relationship creates a generation of inspired students and a pipeline of experienced leaders.
